Reality for Raiders hits hard as season closes with heartbreak

For some, 2016 couldnt have ended soon enough.

The same now goes for a season that is coming to a heartbreaking conclusion for the Oakland Raiders in 2017.

As the new year began, there was at least hope the Raiders could weather the loss of star quarterback Derek Carr to a broken leg suffered the previous week against Indianapolis.

That backup Matt McGloin would at least be able to serviceably operate an offense that ranked third in scoring under Carr at 27.3 points a game.

That the defense would up its performance after being carried for much of the season by Carr and Co.

That a slumping Denver Broncos squad out of playoff contention and missing two key defensive starters (defensive end Derek Wolfe and strong safety T.J. Ward) would roll over Sunday, allowing Oakland to secure the AFC West title and a first-round playoff bye.
